What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects part of the urinary system, such as the bladder, kidneys or the tubes that carry urine. It is usually caused by bacteria getting into the urinary tract.

Common symptoms include pain or a burning feeling when passing urine, needing to go to the toilet more often, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pain in the lower tummy. UTIs are common and can usually be treated with antibiotics if needed.

What Typically Causes UTIs?

Most urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract, usually from the bowel. The most common bacteria is Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally lives in the gut.

Some people are more likely to develop a UTI include:

  • Women
  • People who are sexually active
  • Those with diabetes
  • People who use urinary catheters
  • Those that struggle to empty their bladders completely
  • Stress and lifestyle
  • Using communal baths and hot tubs

What Happens During a UTI Test?

During a UTI test, you will usually be asked to provide a small sample of your urine in a clean container. Our doctor will test the sample straight away using a special dipstick to look for signs of infection.

Based on the result and symptoms, we may prescribe antibiotics right away to combat the infection.

With your permission, the urine sample is sent to a laboratory to find out which bacteria are causing the infection and which antibiotics will work best.

The test is painless, and you can usually carry on with your normal activities afterwards.

Why Might I Need UTI Testing?

UTI testing can help find the cause of your symptoms, confirm whether you have an infection, and ensure you receive the right treatment. It may also be recommended if you have frequent UTIs, are pregnant, or your symptoms keep coming back after treatment.

You may need a UTI test if you have symptoms that could be caused by a urinary tract infection.

These can include:

  • pain or a burning feeling when passing urine
  • needing to urinate more often
  • feeling a sudden urge to go
  • cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • blood in your urine, or pain in your lower tummy or back

How Soon Can I Get Results From a UTI Test?

The Doctor will administer a dipstick test which only takes a few minutes to identify any potential bacteria. If the infection is not clear immediately, we may send the sample to be cultured which could take a few days.

Based on your symptoms and results, we may offer antibiotics immediately to help calm the infection or await further results to decide the right course of antibiotics to use.

What is The Course of Treatment For a Urinary Traction Infection or Bladder Infection?

Antibiotics are the most common treatment for treating UTIs including nitrofurantoin (Macrobid), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim), and fosfomycin (Monurol).

Other recommendations include changes to diet such as drinking more water, limiting alcohol, caffeine and highly acidic food such as spicy and citrus foods, until symptoms have calmed down.

How Much Is a Private UTI Appointment?

Adult consultations start from £90 for members and £135 for non-members for a typical weekday appointment. You can read more about our pricing and membership options here.

Are urinary tract infections more common among women?
Yes. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are more common in women because they have a shorter urethra, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. However, men can also develop UTIs, especially as they get older or if they have an enlarged prostate or other urinary problems.
Can children get urinary tract infections?
Yes. Children of all ages can get urinary tract infections, although they are more common in young children and girls. Symptoms can include pain when passing urine, needing to urinate more often, tummy pain, fever, or changes in toilet habits.

Young babies may have more general symptoms, such as a high temperature, poor feeding, or being unusually irritable. If a child is suspected of having a UTI, they should be assessed by a healthcare professional so they can receive the right treatment.
How do you treat recurrent UTIs?
For those with returning, chronic or recurrent UTIs, you may be put on a low dose of antibiotics for longer, such as several months - or be referred to a specialist for further investigation.
How long does it take to recover from a UTI?
Uncomplicated UTIs that occur usually in healthy individuals could be cured within 2-3 days. Complicated UTIs that may be caused by other conditions such as pregnancy, surgery or underlying medical problems may require a longer treatment time.
